Modernizing of the Luxembourg-Beggen wastewater treatment plant

Realization of the new biofilter system of the City of Luxembourg is taking on concrete forms. In an engineering competition open to engineering offices throughout the EU Hydro-Ingenieure together with its partner for many years TR Engineering S.A. (Luxembourg) were awarded the first prize.

With 210,000 PEs the wastewater treatment plant will be the largest in Luxembourg and will be built with a capital investment sum of 52 million €. Biological treatment will be carried out via 12 BIOSTYR fixed beds, each with an area of 113 m2. Three construction phases are envisaged for the realization. First of all the mechanical wastewater treatment systems will be erected on the vacant area of land available. After the first commissioning phase the BIOSTYR system will be constructed on the site of the present mechanical wastewater treatment and the operations building will be built. In the final construction phase the present biological wastewater treatment system will be demolished and the stormwater treatment basins converted.

Located in the centre of the city this plant will also satisfy the most modern urban planning and architectonic aspects. To take account of the central location the exhaust air emissions will also be minimized in accordance with the state of the art (2-stage cross-flow scrubber). A video film with a 3-dimensional tour through the biofilter system can be downloaded at www.alphaut.ch/de. Have fun!

In addition to checking the process-engineering and process workshop drawings, Hydro-Ingenieure will also undertake the on-site construction supervision for these areas. Construction is scheduled for the period 2007 to 2010.
